Big Rivers and ET&S Recognized for Safety Awards

Big Rivers Electric Corporation received two employee safety recognitions from the Kentucky Labor Cabinet and Kentucky Employers’ Mutual Insurance (KEMI) on Tuesday. Big Rivers’ ET&S (Energy Transmission and Substation) location earned its 2nd Governor’s Safety and Health Award. The company was also selected as a KEMI Destiny Award recipient for its second consecutive year.

ET&S is the transmission arm of Big Rivers. More than 30 employees are based out of the 3650 Airline Road location in Henderson, providing service to the company’s more than 20 substations and nearly 1300 miles of transmission line. The ET&S employees reached 500,000 hours without a lost-time injury or illness to earn the Governor’s Safety and Health Award. Kentucky Labor Cabinet Secretary Derrick Ramsey presented the award to ET&S employees during a celebration ceremony.

Kentucky Employers’ Mutual Insurance (KEMI) Loss, Education, and Safety Manager Jeff Floyd also presented Big Rivers with the 2017 KEMI Destiny Award for its commitment and success in maintaining a safe workplace. This award symbolizes what can be accomplished when organizations work together to improve workplace safety. Only fourteen Kentucky companies or entities were selected for the Destiny Award in 2017. The required measures help reduce workers' compensation costs, and include formal safety programs, the completion of on-site training and regular safety meetings, and an ongoing commitment to safety from all levels throughout an organization.Big Rivers now has a total of 46 Governor’s Safety and Health Awards, more than any other entity in Kentucky. This is the third Governor’s Safety and Health Award for Big Rivers in less than a month. Wilson Station received its 15th award on November 30th for 250,047 hours without a lost-time incident, and Sebree Station received its 13th award on December 14th for 3 million hours without a lost-time incident.

“The most rewarding benefit of workplace safety is protecting our most important asset – our employees,” said Bob Berry, President and CEO of Big Rivers Electric Corporation. “We are honored to be recognized by the Kentucky Labor Cabinet for a 46th time and by KEMI for two consecutive years.

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet presents the Governor’s Safety and Health Award in recognition of outstanding safety and health performance. An establishment may qualify for the award if its employees together achieve a required number of hours worked without experiencing a lost-time injury or illness. The required number of hours is dependent upon the number of employees.

The Destiny Awards are presented annually by KEMI to policyholders that best exemplify KEMI's motto, "Control your own destiny.”
